Scholarship FAQs

A variety of scholarships are available at Alverno, based on a combination of merit, service, and need. Alverno scholarships are funded by private corporations, foundations, and individuals who are friends of the school. The criteria for awarding scholarships is defined by the donors and selections are made by the Scholarship Selection Committee in coordination with the Admissions Office.

How is a scholarship different from financial aid? Financial aid is based on financial need. This must be demonstrated through the SSS (School and Student Service) Parents' Financial Statement. A scholarship is based on merit or a combination of merit and need. A merit scholarship is offered for academic merit alone. A merit/need scholarship is offered based on academic merit combined with financial need.

How do I apply for a merit/need-based scholarship? There are two parts to the merit/need-based scholarship application:

  1. The SSS form (for need-based scholarships and financial aid)

The quickest and easiest way is to apply online through www.nais.org. Have your credit card and latest tax return by your side. You can also request SSS forms from the Alverno Registrar’s Office (ext 236). To assure that we will have your information to consider, you must file the Parents' Financial Statement by January 17. See Financial aid FAQs for more information.

  2. The scholarship application, which can be downloaded here, or requested from Alverno.

Download scholarship application for incoming 9th or transfer students.

The scholarship application is very important, and questions should be answered with care. It is due with the 9th grade application. If your scholarship is renewable, you must reapply every year.

It is very important that we receive both parts of your scholarship application on time. If the Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee does not have your complete information when it meets, you cannot be considered for a scholarship.

How do I apply for a merit scholarship? Fill out the scholarship application (which can be downloaded above) and submit it with your application for admission.

What makes a good scholarship application? It should be completely filled out, neatly written, and well thought out. Applicants should give examples of leadership and service they have performed. Please be specific Remember, we don’t know you or what you have done. You need to tell us!

What is the criteria for getting a scholarship? Most of our scholarships come from foundations which have specific requirements. However, the selection criteria below fits them all.

  • All As and Bs for the last three years of school
  • High entrance test scores (incoming 9th)
  • Outstanding recommendations, and excellent comments on report cards
  • Thoughtful scholarship application
  • Financial need demonstrated through SSS if scholarship is need-based)
  • All parts of the scholarship application must have been submitted on time.
Incoming 9th grade applicants and transfer students should submit their scholarship application with their application for admission.

Are all scholarship renewable? If you receive a scholarship, your notification letter will say whether or not it is renewable.

Does Alverno have full scholarships? No. Our average scholarship ranges from $1,000 to $3,000
