Activities

The Activities Program at Alverno High School enables students to foster healthy friendships as the basis of strong community bonding. Students have the opportunity to be involved in the following:

Clubs

Ambassador Corps: Members of the Alverno Ambassador Corps show guests around the school, represent Alverno at high school fairs and elementary schools, host 8th graders on selected visiting days, and are one of the most important public faces of the school. Ambassadors help at the annual Gala, welcome visitors to campus for special events, and volunteer at community events in Sierra Madre. Two co-Secretaries of State are in charge of the club, with help from one representative from each class.

Art Club: The mission of Alverno High School’s Art Club is to promote the imagination and artistic creativity of students through various mediums. Art abilities are further encouraged through projects, which foster discipline, strong work ethics, and imagination. Art Club hopes to foster improvement in other areas of curiosity, responsibility, and involvement in the Alverno community. Responsibilities to the Art Club include attendance at all meetings, which are held once a month. Excused absences must be cleared with the moderator. No more than three unexcused absences or tardies are permitted.

Book Club: The Alverno Book Club, moderated by the school librarian, meets once a month in the library during lunch to discuss a book chosen and read by club members. Any student is welcome to join and the only requirement for club membership is to read the assigned monthly book and to be able to discuss it with fellow students. There are no elected officers, dues, or fundraisers. The purpose of the club is to give students the opportunity to discover new books and authors.

California Scholarship Federation: The California Scholarship Association recognizes students who have achieved academic success on a per semester basis. At Alverno, academic excellence is noted and recognized in this program. Students who are members for at least four semesters during their high school career are honored by wearing a gold cord over their graduation gown.

Christian Service Club: The purpose of the Christian Service Club is to encourage the development of leadership skills and to provide opportunities to exercise leadership.  We strive to serve as Jesus served by living a life that is “others-centered.”  We encourage and provide multiple service opportunities for students both on campus and in the community. The club meets on Wednesday during week “C” in the cafeteria.  Any student who wants to join the club is invited to be part of it, though we limit the number of members to a manageable number.  We have no prerequisites.   All we ask is that members encourage the entire Alverno family to be part of the opportunities provided.

Drama Club: The Alverno High School Drama Club accepts 41 members per year. The students claim "that all the world's their stage" as they plan a lively year. When students join the drama club, they have the opportunity to attend a professional theatrical production, enter scene and monologue competitions in the spring, and work on the fall play. The "Drama Tech club” was also formed so students can participate on the crew of upcoming stage productions. They learn behind the scenes skills including set design, props, costumes, make-up, lighting, and sound.

Gaming Company: The Gaming Company offers a time and place for students to relax and play various strategy games during the middle of the day. Students select games from the cupboard and play during the monthly meetings. This is an opportunity for girls of different grade levels to get to know each other. The games that are available include checkers, chess, Chinese chess, scrabble and upwords. There are several decks of cards for various card games.

Intramural Sports: Intramurals is an activity that allows students to participate once a week in a sports activity. This allows students not involved in team sports, the opportunity to participate in similar types of activities and share in the camaraderie of team sports. Students play flag football, soccer, softball, volleyball, Frisbee and archery.

Knitting Club:
The Knitting Club was founded three years ago by students Lydia Petrovic ‘05, Abby Fong ’05, and Camille Demano ‘05. The club meets every other Friday and students learn the basic stitches such as how to cast on and how to knit and purl. Advanced students also belong to the club. Knitting Club is committed to service. Last year, at our very first craft fair we raised over $300.00. The club used this money to buy two llamas from Heifer International for families in Bolivia. The goal this year is to have two craft fairs to raise money for Heifer International, one taking place in the fall and one in the spring.

Literary Magazine:
Calliope is Alverno's Literary Magazine which publishes short stories, poetry, and drawings. The magazine is an outlet for the creative writing aspirations of students who need a place to publish work which isn't strictly "academic". Calliope also hosts two "Coffee Houses" a year highlighting snacks, skits, music, and the reading of original literary work

Multicultural Club: The Multicultural Club at Alverno High School exists for each member to reinforce the knowledge of her own culture, to share aspects of her culture with other members of the club, and to share diverse cultures with the entire Alverno community. Such expression will be shared through scheduled activities such as dance and music presentations, food festivals, and fashion shows. The Multicultural Club is committed to affirming and expressing the imagio Dei – understanding that we are all made in image of God and thus dignity is a birthright. The club is also committed to the ideal that we are all valued equally by our Creator and thus we insist that all people be treated with respect and love.

National Honor Society: The National Honor Society (NHS) is an organization that recognizes academic success while it encourages the continued development of character, leadership, and community service. NHS students participate in various service projects that benefit the Alverno community and the community at large.  Students who are members of NHS are honored by wearing a blue cord over their graduation gown.

S.A.D.D.: Students Against Destructive Decisions is the Alverno chapter of a national organization dedicated to making young people aware of the dangers all around them. We are a support and intervention group associated with Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Alcohol is only one of our concerns. We also educate our members to the dangers of drugs, emotional depression, human relationship problems and abuse of any kind. Every fourth year we enact a disaster simulation, in front of the whole school, to bring home the awful consequences of reckless and selfish behavior.

Technology Club: The Technology Club offers students the opportunity to learn more about modern technology including the most recent advancements with computers, MP3 players, and cameras, just to name a few. The students involved in the technology club get hands-on experience and practice by assisting with maintenance of the computers at Alverno and helping with software programs as well.
